REC 2 - Film Review.

NOTE: - NO SPOILERS CONTAINED. IT’S SAFE TO CARRY ON READING.

A couple of years ago, I had the crap scared out of me by ‘REC’. I have seen a good many horror movies over the years, but this one really managed to give me the willies. So, ever since I heard they were making a sequel, I have been really looking forward to seeing it.

Well, today was the big day. I have finally seen ‘REC 2’ and it was well worth the wait!

I’m not actually sure if it is quite on par with the original film or not. This was the first thing I asked myself after watching it. Put it this way; if the first one scored 9/10, then the sequel would have to get an 8. And I think the only reason I’d not put it alongside the first film, is because it didn’t hold the same element of surprise. However, this is not the fault of the makers. If you have seen the first movie then you will know exactly what I’m talking about…

Judging it as an independent film, I’d say it was excellent. There are certainly plenty of clever twists and turns. A lot of things are explained in far more detail than the first time round and it’s definitely just as scary. The entire story is well thought out and there are some incredibly original touches. The script follows right from the close of the first film and the continuity is excellent.

There is only one concern I have. After watching ‘REC 2’, I was looking for reviews of it online. Quite by accident, I discovered that a third film is already being planned. This would normally be great news, but I then went on to read the small print… ‘REC 3’ will not be directed by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza. Just how much of an involvement they will have is anybody’s guess; maybe none at all.

I’m sure there are plenty of other very talented Spanish filmmakers out there… let’s just hope one of these is elected to take creative control; and that it’s not turned into a soulless horror franchise like so many films have been before.

Oh, and one last thing (without spoiling the story for anyone); when ‘Quarantine’ (the American version) was written, they really should have stuck to the original story. Because they did not, a sequel is now all but impossible.

I think it’s called ‘shooting yourself in the foot’…

Silly Hollywood!

So, as you all know, it is my birthday tomorrow and in case you are curious as to what to buy me (that means you Pat) I have had my eye on that dvd set for Last Of The Summer Wine, just in case you couldn’t think of anything…
